For the past 40 years, the EPA Regional Wastewater Awards Program has recognized personnel in the wastewater field who have provided invaluable public service by managing and operating wastewater treatment facilities throughout New England.

On October 21, 2026, Mark Sanborn, the New England Regional Administrator, awarded SESD the Industrial Pretreatment Program Excellence Award to highlight SESD’s commitment to improving water quality and protecting human health and the environment.

The Industrial Pretreatment Program prevents the discharge of pollutants to Publicly-Owned Treatment Works (POTWs) which will interfere with the operations of the POTW or its use and disposal of municipal biosolids. In addition, the Pretreatment Program prevents the introduction of pollutants to POTWs that may pass through into rivers, lakes, and streams causing toxicity or other impacts. Implementation of the Pretreatment Program is defined at 40 CFR Part 403.
