Celebrating 100 Years of Community Service

SESD staff, current and former, joined together on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, to celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of our wastewater treatment plant. From 1925 to 2025, SESD has served local municipal sewer departments by collecting and treating wastewater. In support of this essential community service, we process approximately 25 million gallons of wastewater per day, maintain 29 miles of interceptor and force main pipes, and serve approximately 190,000 residents and businesses from our member communities Beverly, Danvers, Marblehead, Peabody and Salem.

Processing over 9 billion gallons of wastewater per year, our treatment facility is essential to maintaining water quality in the communities we serve. We host plant tours and educational seminars for schools, community groups, and wastewater professionals, sharing a behind-the-scenes look at what we do and how we keep operations online 24/7. In order to further our mission of water quality stewardship, SESD hopes to raise awareness about wastewater management by helping people better understand the process and their role in maintaining pipes, equipment, and treatment facilities.
